New York Red Bulls 0-2 New York City FC: Ben Sweat inspires derby victory
Ben Sweat scored one and set up another as New York City FC claimed a 2-0 derby victory over New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Jack Harrison scored in the 33rd minute from a pass by Sweat, who doubled City’s lead in the 65th minute to help secure the club’s first victory at the Red Bulls Arena.
The results lifts City up to third in the MLS Eastern Conference with 30 points, a point behind second-place Chicago. The Red Bulls lie in fifth after their eighth defeat of the season.
City had lost six of their last seven meetings with their New York rivals, including last week’s US Open Cup fourth-round elimination.
But Patrick Vieira’s men atoned in style, opening the the scoring when Harrison met a Sweat pass in the heart of the penalty area and chipped a left-footed strike in just under the crossbar.
It was Harrison’s seventh goal of the season and the 20-year-old’s 11th in City colours following his switch from Manchester United’s academy last May.
City captain David Villa, who has 10 goals in 16 matches, delivered a pinpoint pass in the 42nd minute to Yangel Herrera, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles denied him.
Sweat found the net in the second half, scoring his first MLS goal in only his ninth league match.
He was first to a pass from the left wing and headed the ball into the far right side of the goal, sealing City’s fourth away victory of the season.Soccer Accumulator Bonus
