David Moyes warns Liverpool over Premier League title hopes despite record start
David Moyes reckons Liverpool’s current team is not as good as previous Reds sides – and thinks it still might be too soon to them to win the Premier League.
Liverpool’s record-breaking start to the season was confirmed with a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday, and moved them clear at the top of the league ahead of Chelsea’s game at West Ham.

But former Everton boss Moyes told Goals on Sunday the quality of the trio of Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, who played in the ultimately title-less sides of the late-2000s under Rafa Benitez, showed Jurgen Klopp’s side still have some way to go to reach that level.
Asked whether he thought Liverpool could win the league yet, he said: „No, I don’t think so.
„I think they’ve got a really good team, but you look back at teams over the years at Liverpool and they had great teams, when it was Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres up front.
„This is a good Liverpool team as well – I don’t know if it’s quite as good as that team at that time. They’re playing a good style, with forward players who are exceptional, and because of that I think they’re a real threat.“
Xherdan Shaqiri was given his first league start for the club but, despite making a goal for Mohamed Salah when his superb free-kick rebounded off the bar, he was taken off by Klopp at half-time for James Milner.
Moyes said: „When you play as well as he did and create goals, you’re hoping to boost their confidence.
„But I think Liverpool have got a big programme coming up, I’m sure Shaqiri will play a big part in it, and maybe the manager was thinking a bit further afield than this game.“
