Andy Walker says Hibs fans may see Michael Appleton as an ‘underwhelming’ hire
Andy Walker thinks prospective new Hibernian manager Michael Appleton will need a fast start in order to win over the Easter Road faithful.
Former Portsmouth and Oxford United boss Appleton is set to succeed Neil Lennon – and will take charge of a club who have slipped to eighth in the Scottish Premiership table.
And Scottish football expert Walker, who had a loan spell at the Edinburgh side in 1998, told Sky Sports: „Hibs are on a bit of a dip at the moment.
„I think a lot of the supporters are still gobsmacked that Neil Lennon has left the club.
„Michael Appleton has to realise that he has a lot of work to do, to reach that level of consistency (the club had under Lennon).
„I am sure there are a good number of Hibs fans who will regard his appointment as underwhelming – but he has to take that on the chin.
„He has got a really good group of players and he needs to come up with some big results soon, just to win over the fans.“
Walker’s former club Celtic are six points clear at the top of the table, and thrashed St Johnstone 5-0 on Sunday to book their place in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.
Walker said: „You are coming into the business end of the season and Celtic have got their eyes focused on the ball.
„The winter break has really helped Celtic.
„They had an extraordinary number of games just to qualify for European competition, then to play in the Europa League, all those group games – plus the intensity of the Scottish Premiership.
„So, it was a good time for the players to have a bit of a rest, and they have managed to do some good business in the transfer window.
„They are scoring goals freely and, despite some of the injuries they have, they are not shipping goals.“
