Fernando Llorente: Ref right to allow Tottenham goal
Fernando Llorente says the referee was right to allow his controversial goal that sealed Tottenham’s place in the Champions League semi-finals.
The Spanish striker scored from a corner to reduce Manchester City’s lead to 4-3, which resulted in Spurs winning the tie on away goals.
His goal appeared to brush his arm on its way in, but referee Cuneyt Cakir decided to allow it after consulting the pitch-side monitor.
Llorente backed the referee’s call, saying: „I feel very good, it’s unbelievable what you feel in that moment.
„It was a little bit difficult when the referee was watching the goal, but I think it was a goal. I am very happy to help the team.
„It’s a dream. It’s an unbelievable team and group, and I believe in all the team. I believe we can make history this year. This is our moment.“
Dele Alli, who described waiting to discover whether the referee would allow Llorente’s goal as „horrible“, believes Spurs’ progression to the last four shows they are now one of Europe’s elite.
He said: „We’ve proven we deserve to be here, amongst the top teams in the world.
„We want to keep improving each season; we’ve done that since we’ve all been together. We’re getting further and further in the Champions League each year. We need to really make our mark.“
Spurs now face a semi-final against Ajax, who have already knocked-out Real Madrid and Juventus on their way to reaching the last four of the Champions League for the first time in 22 years.
Toby Alderweireld, who spent five years as an Ajax player, insists Spurs will not underestimate his former club, who have scored 106 goals in 30 Eredivisie games this season.
He said: „Very tough. They play unbelievable football. There will be no thinking ‘it’s just Ajax’; no, they are a very good team.
„They knocked out Real Madrid, Juventus; they played very well against Bayern [Munich, drawing against them twice in the group stages].
„It’s a top team to beat but we’re going to try to perform as best we can, and hopefully get to the final.“
