Sheffield Wednesday in talks with Danny Cowley over managerial role
Sheffield Wednesday are in advanced talks with Lincoln manager Danny Cowley about the vacant managerial position at Hillsborough, Sky Sports understands.
The Owls are looking for a new manager after Steve Bruce quit to join Newcastle in mid-july, with Lee Bullen in temporary charge.
However, Sheffield Wednesday have lost three of their last four league games and are 11th in the Sky Bet Championship table going into this week’s international break.
It is believed any deal for Cowley will also include his brother and assistant, Nicky, making the switch to South Yorkshire, while Cowley confirtmed there had also been an approach from Huddersfield, who sacked Jan Siewert after just three matches of the Championship season.
The Cowley brothers took charge of Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat to Doncaster in the Leasing.com Trophy match but afterwards Danny Cowley said that only the „perfect opportunity“ would tempt them away from Sincil Bank.
„It’s been widely reported that Huddersfield spoke with Lincoln and compensation was agreed,“ Cowley told Sky Sports News after the game.
„It was no disrespect to Huddersfield, who I think are an excellent club and have had an amazing period getting into the Premier League.
„But we’ve worked hard in the three years we have been at this club and have built an infrastructure, right from the academy all the way through.
„Our club is in a really good place, so for us to consider moving our families and ourselves from this football club, it would have to be the perfect opportunity.
„Our full focus and commitment is at Lincoln City.“
Since taking over Lincoln in the summer of 2016, the duo have taken the club from the National League to League One where they currently sit second in the table, two points behind leaders Ipswich.
During their time at Sincil Bank, the club were also the first non-league side to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for 103 years, with Lincoln also winning the Checkatrade Trophy (now Leasing.com Trophy) in 2017-18.
