AJ learned from Ruiz reverse
AJ learned from Ruiz reverse. Anthony Joshua admits he was „beaten to a pulp“ by Andy Ruiz Jr but maintains it is his destiny to rule the heavyweight division.
The British heavyweight was an overwhelming favourite to beat Ruiz when the pair met in New York last June but suffered one of the biggest upsets in recent years.
Joshua was downed four times by the Mexican at Madison Square Garden before the fight was stopped in the seventh round.
The 30-year-old avenged that defeat in the pair’s rematch in Saudi Arabia in December, regaining the four belts he relinquished to Ruiz courtesy of a unanimous decision.
In recent months attention has turned to a potential blockbusting unification fight between AJ and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
However, both have contractual obligations to meet before stepping into the ring together and it looks likely that any undisputed fight will have to wait until 2021.
Joshua, who currently holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO title belts, acknowledges he was dominated in his first fight against Ruiz.
Despite that, he says it has only made him stronger as he sets his sights on securing his legacy as the best heavyweight of his generation.
„I got beat. I got beaten to a pulp. But I had to pull myself back together,“ Joshua told GQ magazine. „Now they’re gonna see the rebirth of me.
„Everyone writes me off in this division. But I believe I will go down as this generation’s great. That’s what I’m destined to do.“
