Alonso doubts 2021 return
Alonso doubts 2021 return. Fernando Alonso has revealed he knows what lies in store for him in 2021 and has all but ruled out a short-term return to Formula One.
Spaniard Alonso won the Drivers’ Championship while with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and his last race success in his F1 came at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.
The former world champion left the sport at the end of the 2018 season and has since tried his hand at other motorsports disciplines across the globe.
F1 has delayed the rules to ’22, so that’s bad news for the sport.Fernando Alonso
Alonso last raced full-time at the end of the 2018/19 World Endurance Championship season and has also competed in the 2017 IndyCar series, finishing 29th.
He made his debut at the prestigious Dakar Rally in January this year.
The two-time world champion has previously hinted that upcoming technical rule changes could lure him back to Formula One but those will now be implemented in 2022. A year after they were originally planned.
That may force a change of heart from the Spaniard. Who gave an insight into his future plans an Instagram Live interview with the Le Mans 24 Hours channel.
„I said, ‘look, in the 2021 there are new rules. So I may come’ as it may be more interesting and the cars will be more balanced. Maybe I’m hungry to travel again,“ he said.
„F1 has delayed the rules to ’22, so that’s bad news for the sport because I think they need to balance the cars and have these new rules as soon as possible.
„So next year in my personal case I know more or less what I’m doing and you will know very soon. I can say no more.“
