Andres Iniesta expects change after bad season for Barcelona
Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta says Barcelona have not had a good season, despite winning the Copa del Rey on Saturday evening.
Goals from Lionel Messi, Neymar and Paco Alcacer secured a 3-1 victory against Alaves at the Vicente Calderon and ensured Luis Enrique won the Spanish Cup in each of his three seasons in charge.
However, Barcelona finished second behind Real Madrid in La Liga and went out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals, leaving Iniesta to reflect on a season of failure.
„When you do not achieve your goals of winning titles, winning the great things such as the league and Champions League, it is not a good season,“ he said.
„But what we had left to control, which was playing this Copa final and winning it, we have done it, and now we need to look into what we might have failed at this season, what do we need to improve, and we will try again next year.
„That is the demand of this team, of this club, and that is what we will try to do.“
The cup win marked Luis Enrique’s final match in charge of the club and Iniesta expects plenty of transfers this summer under their new boss when he is announced next week.
The midfielder’s own future remains unclear, but he insists the outgoing manager will be remembered fondly after picking up nine trophies in three seasons.
„It is very positive,“ Iniesta said when asked about Luis Enrique’s tenure. „Very positive regarding feelings, titles.
„He got here at a very difficult moment, we had had quite a bad year, but we kept winning and getting more titles and that was very hard but this team did it again.
„We will try again next year with new people, some will not be here any more, and the challenge is to keep winning.“
