Arjen Robben says Anfield is his ‘worst stadium’ ahead of Champions League return
Arjen Robben says Anfield is his „worst stadium“ as he prepares to return there with Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Robben has suffered three Champions League eliminations at the home of Liverpool, twice with Chelsea in 2005 and 2007 and with Real Madrid in 2009.
The former Dutch international is battling to overcome a thigh injury ahead of Bayern’s last-16 tie and admits he has unhappy memories of playing at the iconic venue.
„I think if you ask [about] the worst stadium for me, it’s probably Liverpool,“ Robben told the Mail on Sunday.
„There has to be one. You always have your favourite opponent and there always has to be negative one.“
Robben remembers Liverpool as a „cup fighter team“ during his time at Chelsea but they were unable to consistently produce those performances across a league season.
That is no longer the case however, with Jurgen Klopp’s side level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
„They developed really well,“ said Robben, who turned 35 last month. „Credit the new manager, who has done a great job.
„Last year they were in Champions League final, doing well in the league and at the moment they are level at the top, City is close.
„That’s the title everybody is waiting for in Liverpool. It’s a long, long time ago that they won the league and that’s the one they’re dreaming of.’
