Eddie Howe says Bournemouth’s ‘painful’ Burnley defeat must motivate team

Eddie Howe says he wants Bournemouth to use the „painful“ defeat at Burnley as a motivator when they face Blackburn in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash.

The Cherries suffered a 4-0 loss against Sean Dyche’s side on Saturday, their second defeat in the opening six Premier League games after losing to Chelsea earlier this month.

But, the Bournemouth boss says the heavy result can be a driving force for his side to get back on track, starting against Blackburn at the Vitality Stadium.
„It’s painful. It doesn’t matter where you go or what competition you’re playing in, as a group we take it hard because of the expectations we place on ourselves,“ said Howe.
„But we’re looking forward to getting back into action tomorrow (Tuesday) and the chance to respond.“

He added: „What you have to do, I think for me personally, is use it as a driving force, use it as a motivator and work as hard as you can, be as dedicated to your sport as you can and make sure you have those feelings as rarely as possible.“

Howe has often used the competition to give fringe players an opportunity, but he did not rule out selecting players who faced Burnley to see how they react to the weekend’s „disappointing“ result.

„We’ll look at the team and try and make the right calls. We have players who are desperate to play, desperate for an opportunity,“ said Howe.
„There is a train of thought where yes, you might ask one or two to go again to see if they can react well to the disappointment of the game against Burnley.

„But I think we have to make the right call for this game, we want to progress and go through in the competition. It’s a home game and we want to give our supporters a really good show. All things considered, we need the balance of the team to be right as well.

He added: „No matter the run of results you want players who put their hands up and want to play, it’s an opportunity for those players to play and show what they can do.“
