European U21 Championship Sunday preview: Germany v Czech Republic, Denmark v Italy
Germany face Czech Republic and Italy take on Denmark on Sunday in European U21 Championship action, live on Sky Sports.
Group C gets under way with two European heavyweights hoping to add to their success at this level.
Four-time winners Italy are aiming for their first title since 2004, while Germany have not reached the final since Mesut Ozil and Co beat England 4-0 in 2009.
Germany v Czech Republic – 4:50pm on Sky Sports 1 HD
Coached by former international Stefan Kuntz – who scored the equaliser against England in Germany’s Euro 96 semi-final victory – the 2009 winners will be hoping for a strong start.
It’s an experienced squad that includes five players with senior caps, led by Wolfsburg midfielder Maximilian Arnold.
Former Arsenal midfielder Serge Gnabry will be another key man for Kuntz’s side, the tricky attacker having clinched his move to Bayern Munich this summer after an impressive Bundesliga campaign at Werder Bremen.
Czech Republic have pedigree in the tournament themselves, winning in 2002, and in Patrik Schick they boast one of competition’s best young forwards.
The Sampdoria striker is on Max Allegri’s wish-list and reports in Italy claim a deal to bring him to Juventus is close despite late interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
Key players to watch: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich/Germany) and Patrik Schick (Sampdoria/Czech Republic)
Denmark v Italy – 7:40pm on Sky Sports 2 HD
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is the talk of the transfer window after telling AC Milan he wants to leave but attention for the moment turns to action on the pitch.
He will be between the sticks when Italy open their campaign to Denmark, one of six full internationals in Luigi Di Biagio’s squad.
It presents a tough task for the Danes but they have options in attack, including Cardiff City forward Kenneth Zohore.
He ended the Championship season in fine form, scoring 12 goals in total and earning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.
