Kylian Mbappe closes gap on Lionel Messi in Golden Shoe race
Kylian Mbappe boosted his chance of winning the Golden Shoe award after scoring twice as Paris Saint-Germain beat Dijon 4-0 in Ligue 1.
The award is presented to the top scorer in league matches among the top divisions of every European league and has been won by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi for the last two years.
Messi leads the standings with 34 goals, but Mbappe is only two goals behind and plays next weekend, while Barca’s final game is at Eibar on Sunday.
Defeat for Dijon means their three-season stay in Ligue 1 may soon come to an end after they were condemned to a bottom-three finish.
After winning two of their previous four matches, Antoine Koumbouare’s side needed to pull off a surprise result at the Parc des Princes to ensure they had a shot at escaping the danger zone going into the final match. However, the best position they can now attain is 18th, the play-off berth.
Dijon made a wretched start, conceding two goals in the opening four minutes to Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani before Mbappe scored twice either side of half-time to take his tally to 40 goals for the season in all competitions.
Lyon have guaranteed themselves Champions League football next season following their own 4-0 victory over Caen, who still find themselves in 18th and, like Dijon, potentially pitted against the winner of the Ligue 2 play-offs.
Caen, who had enjoyed a spirited run in claiming 10 points from their previous four games to keep themselves in the hunt for safety, capitulated following the break, with a double from Memphis Depay sandwiching goals from Maxwell Cornet and Moussa Dembele, the latter reaching 21 for the season.
Amiens remain two points clear of Caen after they lost a crucial clash 2-0 at relegation rivals Monaco, who are a point above them in 16th place.
After a run of four defeats and three draws in their last seven games, Radamel Falcao and Aleksandr Golovin scored the all-important goals to ease the pressure on Monaco, and only a certain set of results will see them drop into the play-off spot.
St Etienne guaranteed themselves fourth place, and with it a Europa League spot for next season, after they enjoyed a 3-0 home win over Nice courtesy of a double from Robert Beric and a late strike from Romain Hamouma.
Like Lyon and PSG, second-placed Lille also conjured up a thumping win, beating Angers 5-0 with goals from Jonathan Ikone, Jonathan Bamba, Luiz Araujo and two from Nicolas Pepe, with his second from the penalty spot.
