Match-winner Havertz earns Bailey acclaim
Match-winner Havertz earns Bailey acclaim. Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey has praised teammate Kai Havertz as an inspiration for young players after the attacking midfielder’s record-breaking goal against Freiburg.
Leverkusen moved up to third in the league standings after a 1-0 win at the Schwarzwald-Stadion courtesy of a 54th-minute strike from Havertz, who has become the first player under 21 to score 35 goals in the Bundesliga.
Havertz suffered a knock just after the hour-mark against Freiburg, forcing him to hobble off the pitch, but manager Peter Bosz has eased concerns about the potential injury.
After the match, Bosz said: „He is fine. I don’t know how bad it is, but I think he’s going to be okay. “
Since making his debut for Leverkusen in 2016, Havertz has gone on to make 143 appearances in all competitions, scoring 43 goals, and has been a crucial part of Bayer’s push for a Champions League berth.
Leverkusen are also still involved in the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League and the 20-year-old, who has scored five goals in his last four games, is a crucial part of the team according to teammate Bailey.
Speaking after the game to the Bundesliga’s official website, Bailey said: „I’m very happy for him of course. He’s very talented – I think we all know that.
„For him to be able to be doing that gives young players a vision. Anything is possible once you work hard.
„Kai Havertz is a very hardworking player. He’s smart and very intelligent on the pitch. I hope he continues to do this and help the team as much as possible because we need him.“
