Oriol Romeu believes Southampton have potential to improve next season
Oriol Romeu believes Southampton can improve next season under Ralph Hasenhuttl after securing their Premier League status with two games of the current campaign to go.
The Saints’ 3-3 draw with Bournemouth on April 27 ensured their top division status for another campaign and Romeu is keen for the squad to live up to its potential.
Southampton also only just avoided relegation to the Sky Bet Championship last season but secured a top-eight place in each of the four previous years, with Romeu keen for them to end their flirtations with the drop.
„The beginning of the season was tough and not good enough, so getting there with two games to go was a great achievement and now we are all looking ahead to next season,“ he told Sky Sports News as Southampton staged an open training session attended by their fans.
„We felt good the last two months and we feel we can do more and have enough potential to grow as a club.
„As a squad and a club we have great potential, not just players that have been here a long time but the youth and I’m sure some players will come in and add some extra quality to the team.
„I’m pretty sure things will be better but it’s going to be another tough season. The Premier League doesn’t give anything away and we need to work really hard to get in a good position.“
Former Leipzig boss Hasenhuttl took over at St Mary’s after Mark Hughes was sacked in December and Romeu praised the impact he has made.
„He’s made sure everything was being done perfectly, not just on the pitch but also off the pitch,“ added Romeu.
„When we are playing we are a lot more structured, we know what we are doing. We are trying to be more solid as a team, a lot more compact. Now we are probably a rough team to play against.
„He has done really well working tactically with the team and we are all feeling a lot better.“
Southampton play already-relegated Huddersfield at home on Sunday in their final game of the season.
