Paul Gascoigne responds to Scottish Football Hall of Fame snub
Paul Gascoigne says he does not need to be in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame to know how good a player he was and how much he was loved by supporters.
Gascoigne had some of the best seasons of his glittering career while playing for Rangers, scoring 39 goals in all competitions during his three years at Ibrox.
He was part of the Rangers side which won the double during the 1995-96 season and also tasted Scottish Premiership and League Cup success the following year.
The former Newcastle, Tottenham and England midfielder was due to be honoured by induction into the Hall Of Fame at Hampden Park later this month but that invite was withdrawn last week over concerns for the 51-year-old’s health.
Gascoigne had been silent on the matter until Monday morning when he wrote on Twitter: „I played some of the best football in my career at Rangers and loved the support of the fans.
„I don’t need to be in the Scottish Hall Of Fame to be recognised as one of the best. I feel the love and support of the People and know I was the best. Love you all Gazza xxxx.“
Gascoigne went on to tweet directly to @ScottishFA a video of the famous goal he scored for England in their 2-0 win over Scotland at Wembley during Euro 1996 with the additional comment: „NO HARD FEELINGS xxxx.“
Sky Sports News had previously reported at least one SFA board member would have boycotted any dinner where Gascoigne was inducted.
A petition to have the decision reversed again reached nearly 17,000 signatories in the moments after Gascoigne’s Monday morning message.
