Wayne Rooney deserves a great England send-off, says Harry Kane
England captain Harry Kane wants Wayne Rooney to be given a fitting farewell when the forward represents his country for the final time next week.
Rooney is set to feature in England’s friendly with the United States at Wembley Stadium on November 15 – a match you can see live on Sky Sports – as the 33-year-old bows out of international football.
The match, which will see the DC United striker win his 120th cap, is to be called The Wayne Rooney Foundation International in support of the player’s charitable interests.
Kane says he and his team-mates cannot wait to be reunited with Rooney for one last time.
„I do not know too much about how he is going to do it or how long he is going to play,“ Kane told Sky Sports after Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
„But it will be great to see him again, see a few of the boys and a great experience for a few of the younger players in the team.
„Everyone should get right behind it and give him a great send-off.“
Rooney is not expected to captain England or wear the No 10 shirt against the US.
Instead, the former Manchester United frontman is just expected to make a brief cameo as a substitute at the home of football.
Either way, Kane is happy for Rooney to skipper the team if manager Gareth Southgate so decides.
„He deserves it and was a great captain for us,“ he said. „He was captain when I got into the squad and sure, if he plays, of course he will be the captain.“
Rooney heads into the game having scored a record 53 goals for England, while Kane has 19 to his name.
However, the current England captain says he still has a long way to go to catch his predecessor.
„Still a long way to go, but hopefully I can stay fit and healthy, score a few more goals and then see in a few years how close I am,“ he said.
