Were Spain over-confident? How the Spanish press reacted to England loss
Were Spain too confident ahead of their Nations League defeat to England? We look at how the Spanish press reacted to the loss.
The front page of AS focused on Jordan Pickford’s foul on Rodrigo that could have been a penalty, with the newspaper’s resident referee Iturralde Gonzalez saying: „The referee hasn’t given a penalty because Rodrigo tries to keep playing. But you can’t punish a player’s honesty. Not only is it a penalty, it’s a red card“.
Sterling stars as England stun Spain
‘England inflicted severe punishment’
An opinion piece from Alfredo Relano claims Spain were over-confident heading into the Nations League fixture, writing: „Too much confidence can be a mortal sin in the game of football. Spain took to the pitch in Seville with such an air of superiority.“
He also calls England captain Harry Kane’s first-half performance ‘a sheer masterclass’ but did credit Spain with ‘taking the game to England’ after the break.
Marca’s website leads with ‘England bring Spain back down to earth’ and says Luis Enrique ‘got it wrong’ against Gareth Southgate’s side, saying his ‘Midas touch appears to have expired’. They analyse the number of changes made by Enrique as well as the form of players in the squad.
In their own player ratings, Marca also say that only Paco Alcacer and Dani Ceballos can be proud of their performances in Seville.
Sport also focus on the performance of Alcacer and his recent good form in front of goal, with 10 goals in his last six appearances for Borussia Dortmund and Spain.
The front page of their newspaper carries the headline ‘broken magic’ and says the winning streak has ended under Enrique with a performance that ‘was not at the level of other games’.
Mundo Deportivo’s headline just has the word ‘bump’, after their last Nations League outing was a 6-0 thrashing of Croatia. There are plenty of plaudits for Kane too, calling him ‘superb’ on their newspaper front page, and say he ‘destroyed’ Spain on their website.
Journalist Xavier Bosch claims that Alcacer would still not play at Barcelona despite his fine recent form, while deputy director Josep M. Artells analysed the players and why they did not connect as they should on the field, with Kane again the English focus with a ‘masterly’ performance.
