Wilfried Zaha agrees with Paul Merson about Crystal Palace’s struggles
Wilfried Zaha agrees with Paul Merson about Crystal Palace being „the biggest disappointment in the bottom half of the table“.
Zaha also thinks it is a „tragedy“ that Crystal Palace are not higher up the Premier League table as they could have done „a lot better“ this season.
Palace look to be clear of relegation after moving 11 points above the bottom three with victory over Newcastle last weekend.
Responding to Merson’s verdict on Palace’s season, Zaha, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Sky Live clash with Manchester City on Sunday, agreed, saying: „The team is very talented but obviously we have ups and downs and some games we should have won that cost us.
„I am not happy with the way we are really up and down. In this squad I believe we could have done a lot better. We are still managing to grind out the results we need to, though, so I can’t really complain.“
Asked about Palace battling in the bottom half of the table this season, Zaha added: „It’s a tragedy because we are a lot better than that. We are where we are and the last few games are just trying to push on and see how high up we can get.“
Zaha also thinks Palace are sometimes nervous at home, where they have won four Premier League matches this season compared to seven on the road.
„When we are away we play a lot better. I feel people get a bit nervous in front of our own crowd, so the home form has not been the best. It shouldn’t be like that because our support is unreal. We need to do better at home because they are the games you should be pushing to win the most.“
Having beaten Manchester City 3-2 at the Etihad in December, Palace will be looking to have another say in the title race when they host Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday.
Zaha reckons City will be out for revenge, but hopes Palace can „suffocate“ them and claim another surprise win.
„It should be a good game. They will want to get revenge after we beat them. I am looking forward to it like I look forward to every game.
„You can’t let City play. We are going into the game with loads of energy and suffocating them and then we do our best to break on them. Against any top team you need to take your chances and I feel that against them last time we took our chances and it kind of surprised them.
„I feel that is the strategy going into games like that – you have to suffocate that and get around them and take opportunities when you get them.“
