Ferrari and Vettel to part ways
Ferrari and Vettel to part ways. Sebastian Vettel will leave Ferrari at the end of the season after talks over an extension beyond this year broke down between the two parties.
Vettel said there was „no longer a common desire“ to work together and denied the move was motivated by money, while Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto admitted it was „not an easy decision to reach“. Insisting it was a mutual agreement to part ways.
It has been a tough time for Vettel and the team, who have found themselves second best to Mercedes since the German joined from Red Bull at the end of the 2014 campaign.
Mercedes have won the last six constructors’ titles with their main man Lewis Hamilton landing five drivers’ championships in that time to take his overall tally to six.
Four-time world champion Vettel was runner-up in 2017 and 2018 but was further off the pace last season following a fifth-placed finish which saw him not even top dog at Ferrari.
That accolade went to young team mate Charles Leclerc in his first season with the Scuderia and rumours have been rife of a potential break-up.
The split has now been confirmed and Vettel. Who won the world championship title each year between 2010 and 2013 when with Red Bull. „Financial matters have played no part in this joint decision. That’s not the way I think when it comes to making certain choices. And it never will be.
„What’s been happening in these past few months has led many of us to reflect on what are our real priorities in life. One needs to use one’s imagination and to adopt a new approach to a situation that has changed. I myself will take the time. I need to reflect on what really matters when it comes to my future.“
Leclerc praised Vettel and added: „It has been a huge honour to be your team mate.“
