Germany U21 v Spain U21: Stefan Kuntz issues European U21 final warning
Germany U21 boss Stefan Kuntz has warned Spain they cannot take Euro 2017 glory for granted.
The 54-year-old leads his side against favourites Spain in Friday’s final in Krakow after breaking England’s hearts on Tuesday.
Germany beat England 4-3 on penalties, after drawing 2-2, in the semi-final before Spain eased past Italy 3-1 thanks to Saul Niguez’s hat-trick.
Spain have long been tipped to win the competition, but Kuntz insisted Germany are ready to shock them.
„I would like to let others decide who are favourites, but we are not finished yet, we want to achieve something and that’s what we’re thinking about right now,“ he said.
„From the beginning we said we wanted to measure ourselves against the best. We have played Italy, England and now Spain. It’s very cool.
„I am relaxed, we’re enjoying our time. You could see this in the semi-final and this will not stop after the match. It’s difficult because we saw a lot of spectators watched us and we did a good job for our country.
„Against England it was close to perfect. It’s about the quality of the team and the players developing their performances and it could happen on Friday.“
And Spain boss Albert Celades admitted the four-times champions must up their game if they are to equal Italy’s record of five titles.
He said: „Miracles don’t exist and we have to do something more than we did against Portugal (whom they beat 3-1 in the group stage) and Italy. We are prepared to face Germany with the best mentality.
„I don’t want to be boring, but it’s cost us a lot to get here, the players know that. Whatever the excitement outside of us, we’re not aware of that. I see my players and I feel calm as I know they feel the same.“
Spain Under-21 skipper Gerard Deulofeu also dodged questions about his future after reports suggested he had rejected a switch to Barcelona.
Barca had activated a #10.5million buy-back option for the Everton midfielder, but Deuloufeu continued to remain tight-lipped ahead of his final Under-21 appearance.
„We’ll see what happens in my future – it will be clarified in the days to come. We are concentrating on tomorrow’s game. Our objective is tomorrow and lifting the cup,“ he said.
„I am happy with my tournament. You can always improve, we work day to day and I am bringing something to the team in other areas that the team needs.
