MLS round-up: Sporting Kansas City take Western Conference lead after win
Sporting Kansas City moved top of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with a 3-0 win over Minnesota United on Saturday.
Ike Opara opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time and Jimmy Medranda (54) and Saad Abdul-Salam (87) wrapped things up after the break as City climbed into pole position above Houston Dynamo.
Roland Lamah scored a first-half hat-trick as FC Dallas stayed in touch with a commanding 6-2 defeat of Real Salt Lake.
Lamah had three goals by the 31st minute and Maximiliano Urruti and Tesho Akindele made it 5-0 at half-time.
Although Omar Holness (70) and Kyle Beckerman (73) replied for the visitors, Jesus Ferreira capped a good day for the home side with a sixth goal a minute from time.
Eastern Conference leaders Toronto FC slipped to a shock 3-0 loss at New England Revolution, whose goals came from Benjamin Angoua (17), Diego Fagundez (66) and Juan Agudelo (85).
Maxime Chanot and Alexander Callens scored inside the last 10 minutes as New York City came from behind to beat Philadelphia Union, who led through Fabrice Picault’s 69th-minute goal.
Blerim Dzemaili’s 67th-minute effort gave Montreal Impact a 1-0 win over New York Red Bulls, lifting them off the foot of the Conference at the expense of DC United, who drew 0-0 with LA Galaxy.
Vancouver Whitecaps came from behind to beat Atlanta United 3-1. Greg Garza put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute but Kendall Watson (31 and 44) turned things around by half-time and Fredy Montero headed a third midway through the second half for Carl Robinson’s team.
Colorado Rapids were another team who finished with a flourish, in the day’s late game against Columbus Crew.
Crew led thanks to Federico Higuain’s 61st-minute goal – but Kevin Doyle equalised 10 minutes from time and Alan Gordon won it with four minutes remaining.
