Sean Dyche says Burnley were a ‘long way off’ in defeat to Newcastle
Sean Dyche admitted Burnley were not at their best as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle on Tuesday.
The Clarets were looking to extend their Premier League unbeaten run to nine matches, but could not recover after conceding twice in the first half.
Although they did improve after the break, they created few clear chances, and Dyche said: „We were a long way off, particularly in the first half.
„It was a bit better second half but first half we were a long way off. Sometimes that can happen.
„Credit to them, I thought they were better in the first half, they were sharper, their anticipation was better, we know the style they want to play and they delivered that better than we did.
„Second half I was pleased with the effect we had on the team because there was a better energy and demand from the team, without being great, but we asked more questions and caused more problems and got them on the back foot more. It was more like we have been playing.
„It was a mixed bag and they deserved to win. Overall their performance was better, but I am not going to start criticising a group who have been unbeaten in eight games and have produced some massive performances and big results.“
Burnley’s eight-match unbeaten featured a draw at Manchester United and a win over Tottenham at the weekend.
But Dyche said: „It’s probably just a reminder more than anything that if you do come off slightly then you don’t get anything, I thought that was the case tonight.“
